It was recently revealed that Ethan Bronner, the Jerusalem Desk Editor for the New York Times has a son in the Israeli Defense Forces. I’m not one to assume that this, prima facie, creates a conflict of interest that will inherently bias Bronner, or the NYT editorial board, towards light coverage of the IDF. Juxtapositions like these, published March 11, 2010, in the New York Times, were the norm way before Bronner’s son joined the IDF.
The tiny story up and to the right, details the indictment of two IDF soldiers charged with forcing Palestinian children to open suspected booby-trapped objects for them at gun point. The headline for the bigger story, detailing the constructed controversy over a “terrorists” memorial, is actually bigger than the entire story about the Israeli war crime described in the smaller story.
