Even if you don’t give a crap about immigration, the issue has been used for several years to institutionalize federal policies that affect everyone. One of the avenues of proliferation of prisons for profit such as CCA and GEO has been in immigration detention facilities. And now, S-Comm, ostensibly a program that targets undocumented immigrants accused of committing felonies, has become the crowbar for the federal government to introduce a massive bio-metric data collection program.
The Cardozo Law School, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and the Center for Constitutional Rights, last week released documents obtained through a FOIA request that indicate that the FBI pushed to eliminate S-Comm’s opt-out option–one of the reasons may have been as way of rolling out Next Generation Identification programs using biometric data.
